Genesis 1:1 KJV  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

This is the first verse of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. In it, we find an introduction to the beginnings of things. Genesis, as a term, means beginnings. We find the beginning of the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1), the beginning of man and the visible creation (Genesis 2:4), the beginning of sin (Genesis 4), the new beginning or reset after the Flood (Genesis 9:1), the beginning of community (Genesis 11), and the beginning of God's covenant figurehead, Abraham (Genesis 12).

But there is a beginning that goes without mention: the beginning of God Himself. There is no mentioned beginning of God. Our beginning is referenced to the beginning of the heavens and the earth. That is when the time clock of the universe is set. Before that, there is no reference to time, but to One outside of it.

Psalms 90:2 KJV  Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

The mystery of God cannot be overstated. Think about it. We know the Bible as the book about God, but it reserves no place in its 66 books and 1,189 chapters to explain the origin of God. This undermines the scientific method. Why would God start His magna carta by merely casting the presumption that we should know about Him, yet offer no explanation about Himself? He owes us an explanation, an introduction to who He is and why He should lay claim to our obedience and subjection. Don't you think so?

Maybe you haven't thought that before and have merely wondered what His origins are, then dismissed the very thought as blasphemy! This is a puzzle that doubtless persisted among our fathers and ancient men when their consciousness of God awakened.

Job 36:26 KJV  Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.

But God, as He is, did not create us to be distant subjects. He had in mind for us to be sons. He predestined us to be adopted into His family (Ephesians 1:5). So God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, who came on a mission to restore us to sonship.

Romans 8:29 KJV  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Before Jesus made the first disciples sons through His death, He first made them friends.

John 15:15 KJV  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Thereafter, He made them sons. There was information they had access to when they became friends. The Lord spoke to them plainly and not merely in parables, and they had His audience. They saw many miracles, wrote about them, and documented them. But He explained that there were many things He could not yet tell them because they had not yet received the Holy Spirit (John 16:12).

Romans 8:16 KJV  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Romans 8:17 KJV  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
John 16:12 KJV  I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

As sons, we are joint-heirs with Christ of God. There is nothing of God that is hidden from us. We can know the mystery of this great God. It is such a great mystery, but now it is given to us to know.

1 Timothy 3:16 KJV  And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

To know God and His Son Jesus is eternal life (John 17:3). Eternal life is participatory. This means that we partake of it more to the extent that we know God. And this knowledge of the true God comes through the same Son of God, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1–2; John 1:18).

John 17:3 KJV  And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Hebrews 1:1 KJV  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hebrews 1:2 KJV  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
John 1:18 KJV  No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

What point, then, am I making with all this?

God is no more a mystery!

Romans 1:19 KJV  Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Romans 1:20 KJV  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

God is not far from any of us (Acts 17:27), and He is accessible through the knowledge of His Son, Jesus Christ.

1 John 5:20 KJV  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
