Among the Baganda people of East Africa, there once existed the ritual of blood brotherhood, known as omukago, by which a lifelong bond was established between two individuals who were not related by birth. In this sacred and binding practice, a single ripe indigenous Robusta coffee cherry was split open to reveal the beans, and each participant made an incision on the body to draw blood, usually on the right hand or near the navel. Each person took one coffee bean, moistened it with his blood, and then the two exchanged the blood-soaked coffee beans and swallowed or chewed them whole.

This blood covenant was considered far more binding than an ordinary contract, and the betrayal of a blood brother was believed to carry severe consequences, including madness or a curse upon one's lineage. Each blood brother vowed to the other, before his god, that his wealth would be as the other's own, that he would protect the other's family, that the other's friends would become his friends, and that the other's enemies would become his own enemies.

Men swear and make vows by deities, and such oaths are considered completely and inviolably binding, often with severe imprecatory consequences for breaking them. But God swore by Himself, because there is none greater, saying to Abraham and to his Seed, Christ, in whom you are, "Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee" (Hebrews 6:14).

It is settled. It is established, inviolable, and incontestable.

34  My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

That word, like every other word of God, is forever settled and unbreakable. The terms of the covenant, namely its promises, cannot be broken. They are yea and amen in Christ, as 2 Corinthians 1:20 declares.

Our part, then, is to bring forth the covenant, to voice it, to call upon the God of the covenant, and to make warfare against every resistance according to those promises.

Being in covenant with God means that there is, in a sense, a dissolution of the barriers of possession: what is God's becomes available to us in covenant, and what is ours belongs to God. God gave all things to Christ, and now we are joint-heirs with Christ.

That is the power of covenant. When we gave our lives to Jesus by receiving Him as Lord and Saviour, God, too, gave Himself to us. There is a covenantal sharing between me and the God of the universe. Hallelujah!
